Operating Envelopes & Electrical Sizing

Eddy current dynamometers create electromagnetic drag on the spinning rotor proportional to magnetic field and rotational speed. Operational safety requires adhering to thermal, mechanical, and electrical boundaries.

Dynamometer Bounding Factors

  • Maximum Current Supply: Sets the peak low-speed electromagnetic torque.
  • Shaft & Coupler Limits: Maximum allowable mechanical torque before risk of mechanical shear.
  • Maximum Heat Rejection: Power absorbed must be safely dissipated to avoid thermal insulation damage.
  • Maximum Rotational Speed: Safe RPM ceiling for rotor inertia and bearings.
  • Minimum Frictional Load: Parasitic friction from bearings and windage.

Power Supply & Transformer Sizing

Most Eddy current dynos have internal coil resistance between 5 and 50 ohms requiring 5 to 10 amps at full load. Correct current rating ensures fine PID resolution without current saturation or excessive heat.
